Healthy Gums are as Easy as One, Two, Three!
How well do you care for your gums?

health Gums

A healthy smile doesn’t just consist of healthy teeth – your gums matter just as much! And you need to make sure your gums are in good shape in order for your teeth to be, as well.

With that said, we want to share three simple things you should always keep in mind every day to ensure your gums are as healthy as can be:

Floss daily (don’t skip days!)

This is probably the most important step in keeping your gums as healthy as they can be. Your toothbrush alone is NOT able to reach the spaces between your teeth and effectively clean them. If you don’t floss every day, you’re allowing bacteria and food particles to sit in between your teeth and below your gum line, which this can quickly lead to infection and inflammation of the gums (gum disease). You’ll know you have gum disease if your gums are bleeding when you floss or brush. You will need to see our Guelph dentist and hygienist for a dental checkup and cleaning if your gum disease cannot be reversed at home with a change in oral hygiene habits.

Brush daily, and do so gently

It’s important to prevent plaque accumulation on the teeth in order to also protect the health of your gums. This can be achieved by brushing your teeth twice a day for two full minutes each time… but be careful not to use excessive force, or your gums will recede over time. Use a soft bristled brush head and avoid vigorous brushing to keep your gums in top shape!

Eat a healthy, balanced diet

A diet that is rich in vegetables, fruits and proteins is better than a diet full of carbohydrates and sugars. Oh, and research shows that our gums love calcium and Vitamin D… so if you can make it a priority to incorporate enough of these dental-friendly minerals into your diet every day, your smile will thank you!

Your gums (and teeth) depend on you...
