4 Simple Steps to Healthy Gums (and a Healthy Smile)
Are your gums getting the TLC they deserve?

When it comes to the health of a smile, gums matter just as much as teeth do! The gums need to be in good shape in order to provide a healthy and stable foundation for the teeth.

That being said, our Guelph dentist is here to share a four-step guideline for your gum line! Here are four things you can do to help ensure your gum health:

1. Floss every single day

Flossing is CRITICAL to the health of your gums! Our toothbrushes alone are incapable of reaching the spaces between our teeth to effectively clean them. Not flossing daily allows food particles and bacteria to wreak havoc in between the teeth and below the gum line, which can rapidly lead to gum disease. A tell-tale sign of gum disease is bleeding with flossing or brushing.

If you believe you have gum disease, it’s important to act quickly to get those gums back to a healthy state. Be sure to start flossing every day at home, and stick to a proper daily oral care routine. If gum bleeding persists, schedule an appointment with our Guelph dental team. Our hygienist will be able to perform a deep gum cleaning to prevent further infection or destruction of the gums.

2. Brush twice daily, but be sure to do so gently

Brushing your teeth twice a day for two full minutes each session will aid in the prevention of plaque accumulation on the enamel and below the gum line, which is a top contributor to oral disease.

Additionally, it’s crucial to ensure you’re brushing gently and avoiding using excessive force while brushing, as this commonly contributes to gum recession over time. Additionally, it’s best to use a soft bristled brush to do the job, as well.

3. Limit sugars in your diet

A balanced diet low in carbohydrates and sugars, and high in fresh veggies, fruits and proteins is much more healthy not only for your body, but for your smile, too. In addition to this, research indicates that our gums appreciate both calcium and Vitamin D for proper absorption - so if you can focus on limiting sugars while including enough of these gum-healthy minerals into your diet daily, your smile will surely thank you!

4. See our Guelph dentist and hygienist regularly

Routine dental visits, recommended approx. every 6 months or as necessary, are pivotal to the health of a smile. We’ll inspect your gums and teeth during the check-up portion of your visit to make sure there are no issues brewing, and will work to eliminate harmful deposits of plaque and/or tartar on the teeth and below the gum line during the cleaning portion (something that can’t be achieved at home with a tooth brush). This plays a role in keeping both your gums and teeth in great shape!

You owe it to your gums to treat them right…
