Why Are Routine Dental Check-ups and Cleanings So Important?
These two key factors are critical to maintaining a healthy smile.

Did you know? It's crucial to visit your dentist and hygienist for a check-up and cleaning ideally every 6 months, or of course, sooner if there’s a problem to address. The health of your smile not only depends on the care you provide everyday at home - but is also depends on the routine care of a professional.
So, you may be wondering.. "If there's seemingly nothing wrong with my smile, why do I still need to visit the dentist and hygienist?"
This is a common thought. If a person is experiencing no oral pain, no warning signs or symptoms, then really, what’s the point of scheduling a dental visit?
Well, we’re here to answer that! It all comes down to two main factors:
1. The prevention or intervention of oral issues you may not yet be aware of during your check-up or examination
Oral issues don't always present symptoms - especially if they're in their earlier stages. The check-up portion of your dental visit is performed in order to identify any oral health problems that you may not be aware of, and that only our Guelph dentist will be able to detect using her expertise and special technology. She will check for issues such as tooth decay/cavities, enamel wear, gum disease or recession, and any suspicious lesions that may be cancerous.
2. The prevention of oral disease and maintenance of a healthy smile during you professional cleaning
The cleaning portion of your routine dental visit is performed in order to keep the mouth clean, healthy, and free of disease. Our dental hygienist will use special dental instruments or tools to scrape away hardened and stubborn deposits of bacteria from the teeth’s surfaces and below the gum line. This is bacteria that, if not regularly removed, can lead to gum disease which puts the teeth at risk for eventually falling out. This is yet another important reason to get that professional teeth cleaning ideally every 6 months.
Has it been a while since you’ve visited our Guelph dental clinic?
Your smile just might be due for another check-up and cleaning! If you've been putting off your bi-yearly dental visit, don't wait any longer to bring your wonderful smile in to the professionals. Because remember - your oral health depends not only on the care you provide at home, but also on the care provided by our friendly and experienced team.
