Root Decay Prevention

A dentist is examining a patient 's teeth with a mirror.

Root decay or root caries is a serious dental issue that usually impacts older adults, causing painful aches in the affected tooth. If you experience such pain, it's important to visit the dentist immediately to avoid root canal therapy or extraction. At our Guelph dental clinic, our staff is dedicated to helping patients prevent root decay through various preventative measures.

Why does root decay occur?

As we age, we tend to experience receding or insufficient gum that exposes the roots to infection, leading to root decay.

Furthermore, some medications cause dry mouth, which reduces saliva production and leaves seniors more vulnerable to dental decay.

To prevent root decay, gentle brushing with a soft-bristled brush twice daily and flossing once daily is essential.
